James Blair & Mary Harper

Conventional Research
James Blair, Mary Harper and family arrived from Co. Antrim, Ireland in December 1767 and settled in the Waxhaw area of South Carolina.

Known children of James and Mary are: John Blair, b. c1757 m. Jane Douglass; William Blair, b. 1759 m. Sarah Douglass; Thomas Blair, b. 1764 m. Jane Taylor; James Blair, b. 1768 m. Mary Cantzon; Margaret Blair, b. c1771 m. Robert Harper; and Elizabeth Blair, b. c1775 m. Benjamin Harper

DNA Testing
Five participants believe they descend from James Blair and Mary Harper.  All of them descend through William Blair and Sarah Douglass. Four (#163336, #169363, #170070, #170150) descend through William's son William and one (#4178) descends through William's son James.

All five participants tested at least 37 markers. The number of mismatches each had with others is shown in the following table:

Participant #4178 is in Group 4. Participant #169363 is in Group 1. Participants #170070 and #170150, who have the same grandfather, are an exact match and are UGM09. Participant #163336, who also shares the same grandfather as #170070 and #170150, does not match anyone in the project.

Conclusions
The five participants who believe they descend from James Blair and Mary Harper have four distinct and mutually exclusive DNA "signitures". There is no way of knowing which, if any, of these "signitures" belongs to James Blair.
